HAVERFORD, Pa. – Finishing on two medal performances, the Swarthmore College women's track and field team finished second at the Centennial Conference Indoor Championships. The Garnet recorded 81.50 points with seven medals, narrowly edging second-place Dickinson with 81 points.
The second place finish is the best for Swarthmore since taking back-to-back championship titles in 1997 and 1998.
Swarthmore earned three gold, three silver and one bronze medal along with setting two program records. This indoor season alone, the women have set four new program records.
With two events remaining, Swarthmore was in third place behind Dickinson and needed two top performances in the 4x800- and 4x400-meter relays to regain second. In the 4x800, freshman
Indy Reid-Shaw took the lead to give sophomore anchor
Sarah Nielsen breathing room to the finish for gold and Swarthmore concluded the day with a silver medal finish in the 4x400 to secure second place overall with 81.5 points.
Swarthmore dominated the relay events by bringing home four medals. The distance medley relay of Reid-Shaw,
Katie Lin '16,
Liz Tawa '15, and Nielsen took gold with a 12:33.95 finish – 13 seconds faster than second place Johns Hopkins. Also taking gold were the legs of Tawa,
Kate Hannah '17, Reid-Shaw and Nielsen with a 9:47.17 finish in the 4x800-meter relay.
Silver medal team of Lin,
Lulu Allen Waller '17,
Katie Jo McMenamin '16 and
Julia Nee '15 ran a 4:05.13 time in the 4x400-meter relay to set a new indoor program record. The previous record of 4:07.60 was set in 2002 by Njideka Akunyili '04, Elizabeth Gardner '05, Imo Akpan '02, and Claire Hoverman '03.
Swarthmore took bronze in the 4x200-meter relay on a season-best 1:50.89 time from Lin, Allen-Waller,
Julia Nee '15 and
Katherine Zavez '17.
McMenamin picked up 18 points for Swarthmore as she collected gold in the mile run (5:04.33) – two seconds in front of the second place finisher - and continued her day with a silver medal in the 800-meter run (2:19.38). Both marks meet ECAC qualifying standards.
Junior

In the sprints, Nee collected an indoor personal-best in the 200-meter dash with her 27.41 fourth-place finish. She also ran a season-best 1:01.69 in the 400-meter dash to finish fourth overall as well. Lin sprinted to a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter with her 1:02.05 time. The three finishes added 14 points on the scoreboard for Swarthmore.
Allen-Waller sprinted to a personal-best 9.33 60-meter hurdles time, which was narrowly outside the podium. Sophomore
