Weekend Roundup: Women's Indoor Records Fall at the Valentine Invitational


BOSTON, Mass. - Among elite competitors at Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational, members of the Swarthmore College women's track and field team came away with two school records. Part of the team comepeted at Haverford College's Seamus McElligott Invitational on Saturday, February 8.

On Friday evening sophomore Katie Jo McMenamin - a USTFCCCA Division III Athlete of the Week earlier this season - recorded the program's best indoor 800-meter finish of 2:13.68. In the field of 160 competitors, McMenamin placed 19th overall and on the tail of Johns Hopkins' Maggie Shelton. McMenamin replaced the 2012 record time of 2:15.00 set by one of Swarthmore's most notable track athlete, Rebecca Hammond '13.

On Saturday morning and the first event of the two-day meet, the Garnet distance medley relay crew of Sarah Nielsen '16, Katie Lin '16, Liz Tawa '15 and McMenamin took to the track a blazing finish of 12:09.13 for seventh place among 30 teams. The mark crushed both indoor and program record by seven seconds. The previous distance medley record was set in 2012 by Hammond, Kenyetta Givans, Stephanie Beebe, and Jen Johnson with a 12:16.23 finish.

Elsewhere on the track, freshman Indy Reid-Shaw recorded the programs second-best finish in the 3,000-meter distance run with her 10:17.49 mark.

Nielsen and Tawa ran in the 800-meter run with times of 2:20.80 and 2:25.60, respectively. Lin came close to a personal-best time in the 400-meter dash with her 1:00.51 finish on Friday.

From Haverford College, Swarthmore picked up a handful of personal-best marks and two ECAC qualifying marks.

In the mile run, freshman Kate Hannah was the first Garnet to cross the finish line and seventh overall, pacing a 5:34.61 personal-best mark. Three other teammates were in the event as well - Kate Crowley '16 (5:55.90), Sophia Frantz '16 (6:07.23) and Ariel Henig '17 (6:19.76) - Frantz and Henig recorded personal-bests.

For the 5,000-meter distance, sophomore Jenna Cody recorded a time of 18:31.26 and freshman Tess Wei - a collegiate first in this event - paced the track in 19:08.62.

Junior Julia Nee continues to improve her times in the sprint distances - 8.70 (60-meter dash) and 27.93 (200-meter dash). Freshman Lulu Allen-Waller managed two, taking first place in the 60-meter hurdles on a 9.63 sprint and finished the 400-meter dash in 1:05.82.

On the field, junior Osazenoriuwa Ebose took first place in the shot put with her throw of 11.70 meters (38' 4.75").

Swarthmore returns to action Friday, February 14 in the Lafayette/Rider Invitational held at the NYC Armory beginning at 4:00 p.m.
