Swale Earns Gold in Pentathlon, Women’s Team Places Inside Top-Three Overall

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's track & field team took home four medals on the opening day of the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday. The women currently sit in third place with 36.50 points behind Johns Hopkins and Dickinson. 

Hannah Swale successfully defended her conference championship in the pentathlon to earn the team's lone gold medal. The sophomore broke her own program record with 2,945 points, while taking first overall in the 60m hurdles and shot put. Swale earned a top-three finish in every pentathlon event. 

Elizabeth Agyei also earned an individual medal in the weight throw, while the Garnet reached the podium in the distance medley and 4x800m relays, respectively. 



HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swale claimed gold in the pentathlon with a program-record 2,945 points. The sophomore bested her previous program record as she earned a top-three finish in all five events. Swale won the 60m hurdles (9.61) and shot put (10.95m) with a pair of program records. She also placed second overall in the long jump (4.75m), while earning third in the high jump (1.47m) and 800m run (2:45.88). Sarah Sonntag also competed in the pentathlon as she held on for an eighth-place finish. The first-year's best event was the high jump, where she placed fourth overall at 1.41m. 

- Swale also competed in the 60m hurdles and triple jump. The sophomore qualified for the finals with a time of 9.74 in the 60m hurdle prelims, while placing eighth in the triple jump. 

- Agyei earned her first collegiate medal with a second-place finish in the weight throw. The junior threw a pair of personal bests on her opening two attempts with her second throw traveling 14.71m. Agyei led for the entire contest until she was passed by a Johns Hopkins thrower on her final attempt. Agyei previously finished fifth-overall at last season's championships. Tate Garcia also competed in the event with a top mark of 12.40m to earn 10th overall. 

- The Distance medley relay of Sophie Goodwin, Cami Bortz, Morgan Mouer and Olivia Montini secured bronze with a 12:39.65 finish. The team placed behind Dickinson and Johns Hopkins to earn six points for Swarthmore. 

- The 4x800m relay of Mouer, Lucy Valencia, Alina Irvine and Goodwin won bronze to add another medal to the team's total. Goodwin passed several teams on the final leg of the relay to put Swarthmore on the podium. 

- Sophie Goodwin recorded a personal best of 11.00m to place fifth in the triple jump. After fouling on her first attempt, Goodwin posted personal bests on her second and third jumps. Swale also earned a point in the event with a distance of 10.76m to place eighth.
