LANCASTER, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's track & field team racked up four individual victories for a successful start to the indoor season at Franklin and Marshall College's Diplomat Open on Friday.
Sophie Goodwin stood out in her first collegiate indoor meet, winning both the 800 meters and triple jump. The Garnet also received wins from
Elizabeth Agyei in the weight throw and
Olivia Montini in the 5000 meters.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Goodwin dominated the 800, posting a winning time of 2:23.48 and defeating the runner-up by nearly six seconds. She triumphed in the triple jump with a distance of 34' 7" (10.54m), which she recorded on her second attempt. Goodwin was one of three Swarthmore athletes in the top four in that event as
Hannah Swale and
Caroline Hill came in third (34' 1.5", 10.40m) and fourth (33' 0.5", 10.07m) respectively.
- Agyei earned the win in the weight throw with a career-best toss of 46' 2" (14.07m) on her second attempt. She eclipsed the second-place throw by eight inches.
Tate Garcia also registered a personal best in the event and came in fourth (45' 1", 13.75m). In addition, Garcia took second place in the shot put with a career-best 39' 2.5" (11.95m).
- Montini started the season off strong with a win in the 5000 meters, clocking in at 18:16.44. There was just under a 10-second gap between her and the runner-up.
- Hill and Swale both picked up their second top-five finish of the day in the high jump, taking third (4' 11", 1.50m) and fifth (4' 9", 1.45m) respectively. Also in the jumps, the Garnet placed three in the top 10 of the long jump with
Lydia Morris-Kliment (third – 16' 8.5", 5.09m), Swale (ninth – 14' 8", 4.47m), and
Alyssa Zhang (10
th – 14' 6.5", 4.43m).
- On the track, Morris-Kliment had a fifth place in the 200 meters with a time of 27.45.
Lucy Valencia finished sixth in the 800 meters, crossing in 2:38.48.
