ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa.—Swarthmore College freshman
Vamsi Damerla finished in a tie for second overall at the Centennial Conference Championships on Sunday afternoon after a three-hole playoff was needed to decide the medalist. His performance at the championship landed him the Centennial's Rookie of the Year honors.
Damerla shot a 77 (+5) on Sunday on the 6,713-yard Bridges Golf Club course to give him 227 for the weekend. After 54 holes of golf, five players were even at 227. Two players were eliminated after the first hole, but Damerla advanced to holes two and three. On the third hole, McDaniel's Brian Norwitz sank a birdie to clinch medalist honors.
As a team, Swarthmore finished in fourth with a 924 after carding a 311 on day three. Damerla collected par on 11 holes and birdied the 12th hole en route to his team-best 77.
Michael Chen,
Nick DiMaio and
Dan Altieri all chalked up 78s on Sunday.
Chen ranked 12th overall with a weekend score of 232.
Nick DiMaio finished in 14th with a 233.
Dan Altieri shot a 237 to tie for 20th.
Drew Langan posted Swarthmore's fifth total, carding a 240.
Swarthmore finished at 60 strokes over par, 19 fewer strokes than at last year's championship.
The Garnet will look to build on this year's experience next season when they return a solid core of young golfers.
