FULL RESULTSDELAWARE, Ohio – Sophomore
Katie Jo McMenamin of the Swarthmore College women's outdoor track & field team earned All-America laurels by placing seventh in the 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, May 24 at George Gauthier Track.
McMenamin, who was seeded 10th entering the championship meet, stayed in the back of the group before making her move on the bell lap to punch in a time of 4:37.25. The sophomore was competing in her second NCAA Championship event after most recently finishing ninth in the mile indoors this past winter.
Senior Christy Cazzola of Wisconsin-Oshkosh hit the tape first in 4:32.51, which was more than two seconds ahead of the rest of the field. The 28-year-old also became just the fifth female student-athlete to ever win the same event four consecutive times at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
With today's seventh-place finish, McMenamin became the fifth student-athlete in the history of the Swarthmore College women's track & field program and just the second underclassman to earn All-America recognition outdoors. The others are Desiree Peterkin '00 in the triple jump (1997, 1998 & 2000), Jokotade Agunloye '01 in the 5,000- and 10,000-meters (2001), Hall of Famer Imo Akpan '02 in the 400-meters (2002) and
Rebecca Hammond '13 in the 1,500-meters (2013).
Led by McMenamin, Swarthmore's women's track & field team completed one of its best seasons in recent memory. The Garnet placed second at the Centennial Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, which was the program's highest finish since 1998, and third at the league's outdoor meet this spring.
Peter Carroll was named the league's indoor and outdoor coach of the year for a program that is slated to return more than 90 percent of its scoring from the 2014 conference championship meets next season.
