Box Score

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior Emma Sindelar scored twice in the first half to lead the Swarthmore College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Haverford on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Clothier Field. With the victory, the Garnet qualified for the Centennial Conference Tournament.

Sindelar provided all the scoring the Garnet would need in the first half. The senior, who is the program record holder in all three major scoring categories, put the hosts on the board in the fifth minute on a breakaway. Sindelar received a pass from sophomore Miranda Saldivar and beat senior goalkeeper Robin Chernow in a one-on-one opportunity.

Shortly before the end of the half, sophomore Hannah Lichtenstein found Sindelar charging down the left wing to double the Garnet advantage. Sindelar came down the middle with the ball for a better look before beating the keeper in the 43rd minute of action to make it 2-0.

Haverford (7-7-3, CC 3-6-1) had its best opportunity to get on the board midway through the first half. Skyler Ellenburg rifled a shot from just inside the box that got past Swarthmore junior goalkeeper Reba Magier, but the ball bounced off the post and was eventually cleared away. With just under 10 minutes left, Magier came out on a defensive miscue and covered up the ball on an open look by freshman Kendall Logan to spoil another golden opportunity for the Fords.

Swarthmore continued to attempt to extend its lead until the final minutes of the match.

Magier picked up the shutout victory by making four saves for Swarthmore, while Haverford's Chernow turned away three shots in the losing effort.

Swarthmore (11-6, CC 6-4) will be seeded fifth in the Centennial Conference Tournament and visit Muhlenberg on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at a time to be determined. The winner will advance to the semifinal round to face host Gettysburg, which upset nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins, on Saturday, Nov. 8.

Notes: The Garnet recognized six seniors – Ellen Bachmannhuff, Amy DiPierro, Julia Murphy, Rehana Omardeen, Emma Sindelar and Elyse Tierney – prior to the match. The class has helped the program average more than 11 wins per season over the last four years.
