Box Score HORSHAM, Pa. – Sophomore
Mele Johnson registered a natural hat trick as the Swarthmore College women's soccer team earned a 5-0 victory over Penn State Abington on Sunday, Oct. 4 at Hatboro-Horsham High School.
Swarthmore (7-3) lit up the scoreboard four times in the first half and once in the second frame. Senior defender
Ellen Bachmannhuff began the offensive barrage by heading home a corner kick taken by junior
Melissa Trofa exactly two minutes into the match.
Johnson then followed up with three consecutive goals, beginning at the 6:45 mark on a long strike from outside the box. She also scored in the 22nd and 24th minutes of action to make it 4-0 heading into the break before freshman
Katie Dougherty added an insurance tally in the second half to produce the final outcome.
Juniors
Reba Magier and
Caela Long combined for the shutout between the pipes for Swarthmore, which has won five of its six non-league matchups this fall. Magier made one save and Long recorded two stops. Sheridan of Penn Abington (8-4) turned away seven Garnet shots in the losing effort.
Swarthmore resumes Centennial Conference play when it visits Gettysburg on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.
Notes: Mele Johnson became the second Swarthmore student-athlete to net a natural hat trick this fall after field hockey's Erin Gluck, who scored three consecutive goals in a span of four minutes on Sept. 4 against Richard Stockton … It was also the first natural hat trick recorded by a women's soccer player since Megan Colombo '11, the program's all-time leading goal scorer, accomplished the feat in a 5-0 triumph over Bryn Mawr on Oct. 9, 2010.
