Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – With postseason implications on the line, the Swarthmore College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision in overtime to Muhlenberg on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at a soaked Clothier Field.
Muhlenberg (10-3-2, CC 6-2) scored the only goal of the match in the 94th minute to escape with the win in stunning fashion. Carly DeNigruis attempted a shot that appeared to be saved by Garnet junior goalkeeper
Reba Magier, who leaped and caught the ball that was headed to the top right corner of the net. The officials, however, ruled that the ball had completely crossed the goal line.
After an evenly played and scoreless first half,
Hannah Lichtenstein had two quick opportunities to put the Garnet on the board early in the second frame. The sophomore, however, had both of her shots saved by goalkeeper Jen Mermelstein.
Miranda Saldivar and
Aine Schanche also unleashed shots on target that were turned away to keep the match deadlocked at 0-0 through regulation.
After sophomore
Mele Johnson sent a rocket that went wide left, Muhlenberg came back the other way and scored the golden goal of the match to earn the sudden victory in the extra session. The strike from DeNigruis lifted the Mules into third in the standings, while the Garnet fell to sixth and remain in the hunt for a postseason berth with two conference matches remaining.
