Box Score Dover, Del. – Sophomore
Melissa Trofa netted two insurance goals and added an assist in leading the Swarthmore College women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Wesley on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Scott D. Miller Stadium. The Garnet used a balanced scoring attack and a stifling defense that yielded only six shots to hand the Wolverines their first loss of the season.
Swarthmore (3-1) outshot the host school by a 10-1 count in the first half and scored twice within a four-minute span to break loose. Junior
Emma Sindelar put the Garnet on the board by finishing passes from freshman
Miranda Saldivar and Trofa in the 26th minute, and freshman
Rebecca Mayeda doubled the lead shortly afterwards by stealing the ball away from the Wesley defense and beating goalkeeper Samantha Brannigan with a shot to the left corner.
The Garnet founded the back of the net three more times in the second half to cruise to their third win of the season. Senior tri-captain
Megan Brock received a pass from freshman
Caroline Khanna and netted her first goal of the 2013 campaign by firing the ball to the right corner. Trofa then provided insurance by scoring twice in the 86th and 90th minutes of action.
Sophomore
Reba Magier earned the victory in goal for Swarthmore by turning away the only shot she faced in the first half.
Caela Long, a senior, made two saves on five opportunities in the second frame to combine with Magier for the shutout. Brannigan recorded 11 stops for Wesley (2-1-1) in the losing effort.
