Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. – Senior
Megan Brock scored her fourth goal of the season to spark a comeback bid, but the Swarthmore women's soccer team fell to Franklin & Marshall by a 2-1 score in the inaugural Centennial Conference match for both schools on Sunday, Sept. 15 at the Mayser Center. A pair of first-half tallies by Nicole Ryneck would prove to be the difference for the Diplomats.
Brock put the stamp on ferocious late charge by the Garnet with a late goal that cut the deficit in half in the 80th minute of regulation. Brock turned in the box and fired in a low shot to the far side of the frame to beat the keeper. Junior
Emma Sindelar recorded the assist.
The culminating goal of a strong second half by Swarthmore (4-2, CC 0-1) breathed new life into a team that now just trailed by one. The relentless Garnet fired an additional shot and earned a corner in the waning moments of play. However, goalkeeper Amanda McGowan was able to charge out and disrupt an attempt by
Miranda Saldivar that sailed over the goal before time would run out.
Decisive play from Ryneck in the first half proved paramount in the win for Franklin & Marshall (3-1-1, CC 1-0). Ryneck's first goal was a header into the near post off a cross from the left flank that was sent in by junior Allison Miller in the 32nd minute. Just ten minutes later, Ryneck struck again by sliding in a shot to the far post from the left side. Senior Allyson Reid was credited with the assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Reba Magier's clean sheet in the second half kept Garnet hopes alive. She finished with six saves on the day, while her counterpart, Amanda McGowan, tallied four.
The Garnet will look to rebound in Centennial Conference play on the road against Ursinus on Wednesday Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
