Box Score ANNVILLE, Pa. – Junior
Emma Sindelar scored two second-half goals to help lead the Swarthmore College women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Lebanon Valley in an ECAC quarterfinal match on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at Herbert Field. With the victory, the Garnet advanced to Saturday's semifinal round.
Swarthmore, which has now scored 12 goals in its last three matches, got on the scoreboard first when
McCleary Philbin found the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 17th minute. It was the senior's fourth marker in the last three matches.
Lebanon Valley (11-9-2), however, answered right back before the break courtesy of a Sammy Bost tally in the 35th minute. The freshman finished a pass from classmate Johnna Garbrick inside the box by placing the ball into the left corner of the net. The Garnet attempted to take the lead before halftime, but a header by freshman
Caroline Khanna in the waning seconds off a corner kick attempted by senior
Megan Brock sailed just wide of the net.
The teams continued the seesaw battle into the second half. After the close call to end the first, Swarthmore quickly regained the lead in the 50th minute. Junior Ellen Bachanhuff came charging down the right side and sent in a dangerous cross to Sindelar, who fired the ball into the open net to put the Garnet ahead before Katie Deardorff answered back just 7:24 later. The senior midfielder potted a rebound off an initial shot that deflected off the crossbar to tie the match at 2-all.
Despite surrendering a one-goal lead twice, Sindelar was able to find the back of the net for a team-leading 10th time this season in the 78th minute to eventually give the Garnet the postseason victory. The junior trapped a pass in the middle of the box from Philbin and chipped the ball past senior goalkeeper Becca Sykes for her second goal of the match and fourth game-winning tally of the season.
Sophomore
Reba Magier earned the victory between the posts by making eight saves on 24 chances for Swarthmore, which is looking to win its fourth ECAC title since 2007. Lebanon Valley's Becca Sykes, a senior, turned away five of the 14 shots she faced in the losing effort.
Swarthmore (10-5-2) will host Arcadia, which defeated McDaniel by a 3-1 score in its quarterfinal match earlier in the day, in the semifinal round on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. The winner will advance to play in the championship match on Sunday.
