Reba Magier made three saves and junior
Ellen Bachmanhuff nearly scored her first goal of the season, but the Swarthmore College women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss against Haverford on Saturday, Oct. 26 at historic Walton Field.
The teams played the first half even and attempted four shots apiece. The Garnet nearly got on the board in the 37th minute when Bachmanhuff unleashed a shot from 15 yards out that hit the post. Senior
Megan Brock then attempted to pot the rebound from just outside the box, but goalkeeper Robin Chernow made a point-blank save and the ball was cleared away from danger to keep the match scoreless heading into the break.
Haverford (9-2-5, CC 6-0-3) was able to break through with the only goal it needed in the 75th minute. Meg Boyer netted her seventh goal of the season on an unassisted tally by shooting the ball to the top right corner of the net.
Swarthmore had several chances to score the equalizer before the end of regulation and nearly found the back of the net in the 81st minute. Working from the left side, Bachmanhuff attempted an off-balance shot that clanked off the right post. Senior
McCleary Philbin appeared to tie the match by potting the rebound into the upper half of goal, but the senior was called offside. Brock had another good look saved by Chernow in the 82nd minute, allowing the Fords to escape with the win.
Magier made three saves on nine opportunities in the losing effort for Swarthmore. Haverford's Chernow stopped two of the five shots she faced to pick up the shutout win.
Swarthmore (7-5-2, CC 2-4-2) continues Centennial Conference action with playoff implications on the line when it hosts Bryn Mawr on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
