Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's soccer team (13-6-2) came up short in an ECAC semi-final round match, falling 5-3 in penalty kicks to Wilkes University (12-4-5).
In a decisive shootout between two inseparable teams, Wilkes hit all 5 of their shots to win and advance to the final of the ECAC tournament, facing Stevenson tomorrow afternoon.
The first half of the match featured the only two goals of the game and early excitement. The Garnet didn't make the home crowd wait long before converting in the 2nd minute of regulation. Sophomore and all-Centennial forward Emma Sindelar recorded her 6th goal of the year unassisted to put Swarthmore up 1-0 early.
However, in the 30th minute, sophomore Alicia Roberts would tie the game for the Colonels, with assists being credited to senior Lyndsay Ellis, and freshman Megan Binder.
The match would remain tied for the rest of regulation and through two periods of extra time. Stalwart defense was a mark of this result, featuring strong and organized play from Swarthmore's back 3, guided by freshmen keeper Reba Magier who finished with three saves.
On the other side of the pitch, Wilkes was unrelenting defensively as well, inspired by freshman goalkeeper Kate Mahoney, who capped a strong performance with four saves of her own.
An unfortunate end for Swarthmore women's soccer did no justice to a strong season. The Garnet finished with a commendable 13-6-2 (6-3-1 CC) record, and can cherish a Centennial conference playoff appearance, as well as an ECAC tournament run.
