Softball Places Five on CSC Academic All-District Team

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Five Swarthmore College softball players were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team this week.
 
Lane Barron, Avery McClure, Ava Babcock, Iris Barone, and Lilly Goldberg all received the honor. Barron and Barone earned the nod for the third consecutive year.
 
To be eligible for Academic All-District accolades, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better. In addition, they had to have competed in 90 percent of the institution's games played or start in at least 66 percent of the institution's games. For pitchers, a student-athlete must have made at least 17 appearances or pitched 35 innings. The Academic All-District Team is part of the Academic All-America program, which is the longest running and premier award for athletic and academic success across college sports.



 
Barron went 11-5 with a 3.12 ERA as the Garnet's number two pitcher behind Goldberg. She tossed nine complete games with three shutouts. The senior walked only 25 batters while striking out 29 in 92.0 innings.
 
McClure batted .407 with a .997 OPS. She tallied 48 hits, including three doubles and three home runs. The senior drove in 27 runs and scored 27 times. McClure had six three-hit games and had three RBI four times.
 
Babcock compiled a .264 batting average, .796 OPS, 24 hits, nine doubles, 21 RBI, and 20 runs. She had four multi-hit contests and tallied four RBI twice.
 
Barone led the Garnet with a .447 batting average and 1.104 OPS. She produced 67 hits, eight doubles, seven triples, 20 RBI, 49 runs, and 37 stolen bases. Barone also was a steady hand in center field, committing just one error all season.
 
The Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Year, Goldberg posted a 20-4 record with a 1.37 ERA, becoming the first pitcher in program history to record 20 wins in a season. She hurled 18 complete games with five shutouts. The sophomore walked just 34 batters and struck out 104 in 158.2 innings while opponents hit just .208 against her.
 
All five athletes garnered All-Centennial accolades with Barron, McClure, Barone, and Goldberg also being chosen All-Region.
