Softball Garners a Record Five All-Region Honorees

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Swarthmore College softball team had a program-record five players selected to the All-Region V Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
 
Lilly Goldberg and Iris Barone were named to the All-Region First Team while Lane Barron, Avery McClure, and Emilee Espinoza garnered third team recognition. It is the second straight All-Region nod for Goldberg and Barone.



 
The Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Year, Goldberg posted a 20-4 record with a 1.37 ERA, becoming the first pitcher in program history to record 20 wins in a season. She hurled 18 complete games with five shutouts. The sophomore walked just 34 batters and struck out 104 in 158.2 innings while opponents hit just .208 against her. She led the region in wins and ERA, tied for first in complete games, and ranked second in innings pitched and WHIP, tied for second in shutouts, third in hits allowed per seven innings, seventh in strikeouts, and 12th in strikeout-to-walk ratio.
 
Barone led the Garnet with a .447 batting average and 1.104 OPS. She produced 67 hits, eight doubles, seven triples, 20 RBI, 49 runs, and 37 stolen bases. The senior was second in the region in batting average, runs, and stolen bases, tied for second in triples, third in runs per game, fourth in hits and on-base percentage, ninth in total bases, and 16th in slugging percentage. Barone also was a steady hand in center field, committing just one error all season.
 
Barron went 11-5 with a 3.12 ERA as the Garnet's number two pitcher behind Goldberg. She tossed nine complete games with three shutouts. The senior walked only 25 batters while striking out 29 in 92.0 innings. Barron tied for sixth in the region in shutouts and tied for 12th in victories.
 
McClure batted .407 with a .997 OPS. She tallied 48 hits, including three doubles and three home runs. The senior drove in 27 runs and scored 27 times. McClure had six three-hit games and had three RBI four times.
 
Espinoza finished with a .384 batting average and .967 OPS. She posted 53 hits, 12 doubles, three triples, 38 RBI, and 29 runs. The team leader in doubles and RBI, Espinoza ranked 14th in the region in RBI.
 
The Garnet captured their second straight Centennial Conference championship and reached the NCAA Regional final. Swarthmore recorded a program-record 35 victories, finishing with a 35-10 record.
