Men’s Swimming Finishes Third at Centennial Championships

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's swimming team finished third at the Centennial Conference Championships on Sunday afternoon. The Garnet wrap up the weekend with five gold, three silver and two bronze medals. 

The 400 freestyle relay of Levi Tipton, Cami Wilson, Sean Neirynck and Danny Castle closed out the championships with a gold-medal finish. Swarthmore took first place in the event for the fourth-straight season. The swim also marked Wilson's fourth gold medal of the meet. 

Mateo Smith secured the team's second medal of the session, earning silver in the 200 butterfly. The junior has finished as the runner-up in the event for the second-straight year. 

Johns Hopkins won the team championship with 940.5 points, while Gettysburg followed at 726. The Garnet followed behind with 675 points to earn a top-three result. 


HOW IT HAPPENED
- Dylan Herink swam in the top heat of the 200 backstroke, finishing eighth with a time of 1:49.80. The junior fell just short of his personal best, which ranks second all-time in program history. Nolan Weygandt won the second heat with a 1:52.12 mark, posting the fifth-fastest all-time swim. The rookie was ninth overall in the event. 

- Tipton put up a fast time of 45.19 in the fourth heat of the 100 freestyle, finishing fourth overall. The sophomore posted the third-fastest mark in program history as he nearly climbed into medal position from an earlier heat. Castle swam in the top heat, placing sixth overall with a 45.80 finish. Benton Greenberg also snuck into the top-eight with a 46.02 mark. 

- Timothy Fan battled his way into the 200 breaststroke top-eight, finishing fifth overall at 2:05.77. The effort ranks sixth all-time in program history. 

- Smith fought to a second-place finish in the 200 butterfly. The junior claimed silver with a time of 1:50.48 to move into second all-time in program history. Sam Peterson also swam in the top heat, finishing eighth at 1:53.91. 

- Swarthmore closed out the meet with a gold medal in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Tipton, Wilson, Neirynck and Castle won an exciting finale with a time of 2:59.01 - besting the Bullets by three-hundredths of a second . The time ranked second all-time and outperformed the NCAA B cut. The Garnet B relay of Greenberg, Weygandt, Matthew Kim and Luke Magnuson also touched first in their race with a 3:03.78 finish. 

UP NEXT
The Garnet will prepare for the NCAA Championship Tournament, where they have several athletes in position to qualify. Selections will be announced on Friday.
