EAST MEADOW, NY - The Swarthmore College golf team got off to the best start imaginable with a first-place finish at the rain-shortened George Cangero Invitational on Saturday. Garnet first-year
Michael Yuen led the entire field with a 66 (-6), finishing four strokes ahead of the runner-up.
Yuen made history in his rookie debut, matching the program's lowest round at six-under-par. The first-year played a mistake-free round carding zero bogeys, four birdies and an eagle.Â
As a team, the Garnet shot an even 288 to beat Adelphi University by two strokes. The round marked the ninth lowest in program history.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Yuen was remarkable from start to finish, cruising to a four-stroke victory. The rookie birdied on the sixth and eighth holes with an eagle on the seventh to finish four-under on the front nine. Yuen then added a pair of birdies on the back stretch to end his collegiate debut at six-under.
- Max Ash took home a top-five finish, carding an even 72. After birdying the first hole, the junior struggled on the front nine with a trio of bogeys. Ash then regrouped on the back stretch with three-straight birdies to move under par. He finished the round at even to tie for fifth overall.
- Phillip Kim tied for 13th place in a solid rookie debut. The first-year finished two-over at 74 with a birdie on the 17th hole. Kim shot one-under on the back nine after shooting three-over on the front. Â
- Dylan Zhang began his senior campaign with a 76 (+4) to tie for 22nd. The senior combined for two birdies on the round.Â
- Judah Fulchiero was 32nd overall at six-over, while Phelps Wang shot nine-over for 43rd place. Fulchiero carded a 78 with three birdies, while Wang added a pair of birdies for a 81.Â
