GREENWOOD, Ind. – Four Swarthmore College men's tennis student-athletes were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team on Tuesday.
Andres Fente,
Michael Melnikov,
Rishi Verma, and
Winston Zhang all earned the award for the Garnet. It is the second straight year that Fente and Melnikov received the honor.
To be eligible for Academic All-District accolades, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, be in the lineup for 70 percent of an institution's days of competition, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better. The Academic All-District Team is part of the Academic All-America program, which is the longest running and premier award for athletic and academic success across college sports.
Fente was an All-Centennial First Team Doubles selection. He went 14-4 in doubles play, including 13-4 with regular partner
Kai Chen.
Melnikov was the Centennial Player of the Year for the third time and earned First Team Singles recognition. He has a 23-5 record and was selected to compete at the NCAA Individual Championships for the third straight year.
Verma was chosen All-Centennial Second Team Singles after compiling a 16-10 record, including 5-0 in conference action.
Zhang was an All-Centennial Second Team Doubles honoree. He had a 16-4 mark, including an 11-1 record with regular partner
Max Lindstrom.
The group helped Swarthmore capture its third consecutive Centennial Conference title and advance to the NCAA Round of 16 for the second year in a row.
