No. 7 Men’s Tennis Clinches Centennial Championship Berth with Win Over Washington

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 7 Swarthmore College men's tennis team advanced to its 11th-straight Centennial Conference Championship match with a 4-0 triumph over Washington College on Friday. The Garnet look to capture their fourth-straight conference championship against Haverford College on Sunday. 

The Garnet claimed the doubles point with wins in the second and third positions. Swarthmore then went on to clinch the match with singles victories from Michael Melnikov, Andres Fente and Dylan Hayes Gilbert

Fente was a multiple-time winner with victories at second doubles and fifth singles.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Garnet picked up the doubles point with a pair of victories. Kai Chen/ Fente won 6-3 at second doubles, white Max Lindstrom/ Winston Zhang won 6-2 in the third position. 


- Melnikov picked up the first singles victory with a win at the top position. The senior grinded out a 6-4 win in the opening set before coasting to a 6-0 decision in the second stanza. 

- Gilbert continued his breakout season with another victory at sixth singles. The reigning Centennial Player of the Week took care of his challenger with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph to give the Garnet a three-match advantage. 

- Fente sealed victory for his squad with a win at fifth singles. The senior won both sets with a pair of 6-1 decisions. 

- Lindstrom was leading in second singles after a team victory was clinched. The senior claimed the opening set 6-4 and was leading early in the second stanza. 

- Rishi Verma was on his way to victory at third singles, winning the opening set 6-3. Nikola Galov also won his opening set at fourth singles with a 6-4 edge. The rookie was leading 3-0 to open the second set.

The Garnet (19-6) look to win their fourth-straight Centennial Conference Championship on Sunday versus Haverford College.
