Wang tees off at Swarthmore's qualifying round

Zhou, Wang Lead Strong Sunday for Golf

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's golf team showcased its depth with a pair of excellent showings at the opening rounds of the RPI Collegiate Invitational and the Golden Oaks Shootout on Sunday afternoon. 

Frank Zhou led the way at the RPI Collegiate, shooting one-under-par in the opening round to tie for the individual lead. The rookie carded his lowest round of the season with a 70 to begin play. He is tied for the lead with one other individual from the host school.

Phelps Wang rose to the top of the leaderboard to pace the Garnet B squad at the Golden Oaks Shootout. The junior also posted his lowest round of the season, shooting a two-under 70 to match one other challenger. 

RPI COLLEGIATE INVITATIONAL 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Zhou sits at the top of the individual leaderboard with a 70 (-1) to pace opening round action. The rookie recorded five birdies for the round, including four on the back nine. Zhou rallied for a stretch of three-straight birdies on the 13th, 14th and 15th holes. 

- Michael Yuen currently sits in sixth overall at two-over with a 73. The first-year standout used a birdie and an eagle to overcome a couple double bogeys. 

- Dylan Zhang, Phillip Kim and Max Ash all matched each other's scores to tie for 19th place. The trio shot a 76 (+5) to remain inside the top-20 after the opening round. All three individuals tallied two birdies, respectively. Ash is competing in the tournament as an individual.  

- Judah Fulchiero rounded out Swarthmore's competitors in 53rd place. The sophomore shot an 81 (+10) for the round. 


GOLDEN OAKS SHOOTOUT
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wang will enter the final round as the clubhouse leader after shooting a two-under 70 to open play. The junior carded five birdies to overcome three bogeys.

- Alex Lyu sits just outside the top-10 after shooting a 76 (+4) to begin play. The rookie collected two birdies for the round as he enters tomorrow's action in 12th place. 

- Harrison Stracks shot a 78 (+6) to tie for 16th place. The first-year carded his lowest round of the year while sinking a pair of birdies.

- Neil Zhu and Thomas Bundy were involved in a three-way tie for 34th place. The Garnet duo shot an 83 (+11) with Bundy registering two birdies and Zhu making up ground with an eagle. 

- Bori Chung is currently 23rd overall in the women's field. The sophomore achieved her lowest score of the season, shooting a 91 (+19) for the round.

The Garnet wrap up competition tomorrow as they close out play at both tournaments.
