Women’s Swimming Builds Lead to Triple Digits, Weygandt Shatters More Records

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The No. 16 Swarthmore College women's swimming team continued to expand its lead on the third day of the Centennial Conference Championships. The Garnet hold a 116 point cushion over Gettysburg College heading into the final day of the championships.

Swarthmore's night started off as well as it could get and only got better with several record-breaking performances. The 200 freestyle relay opened the session by taking down the conference record with a top-five time in the nation. That performance was then followed up by Quinn Weygandt toppling another conference record with the third fastest 400 IM swim in the nation. Swarthmore then went on to sweep every medal in two separate events, while finishing one through five in the 100 butterfly.

The Garnet captured nine medals on the night with four first-place finishes. The women expanded their weekly total to 17 medals with nine golds, four silvers and four bronzes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet opened the night session with a record-breaking performance in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Genine Collins, Ainsley Jane Tambling, Sophie Rotival and Elle Anthony swam to a time of 1:33.24 to set a new championship, conference, program and pool record. The Swarthmore relay finished below the NCAA B cut mark and currently ranks fifth in the nation.

- Weygandt led a medal sweep in the 400 IM with another remarkable swim. The sophomore took down the championship, conference, pool and program records with a time of 4:22.09 to win the event by five seconds. The mark is currently the third fastest time in the nation. Lauren Rohde grabbed silver in the event with a 4:27.80 effort to place below the NCAA B cut. Annaliese Chen also grabbed bronze with a time of 4:32.16 to round out the sweep, while Cara Dominci placed sixth at 4:35.02.

- Swarthmore toppled the entire field in the 100 butterfly as it claimed positions one through five. Collins led the effort with a time of 55.82 to finish below the NCAA B cut. The first-year was joined on the podium by Ashley Wong (56.44) and Lexi Duffy (56.86), who took silver and bronze, respectively. The trio was followed by Anna Liu (56.86) and Tambling (57.19) as they beat every non-Swarthmore competitor. The Garnet also took the top-two finishes in the B Final with Sarah Conley (58.41) and Kaja Arusha (58.94) leading the way. Collins set a new program record in the event with a time of 55.58 in the prelims, while Duffy moved into fourth all-time.

- Kate Hallmark took bronze in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.10. Ava Craig (1:54.88) and Anthony (1:55.81) also placed fifth and eighth, respectively.

- Rotival secured gold in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.33. The junior recorded a faster swim of 1:02.19 in the prelims, which set a new program record and bested the NCAA B cut mark. Paige Poteet also placed fifth in the event with a time of 1:06.87, which was nearly three seconds faster than her prelim swim.

- Wong (57.59) finished just outside of the podium with a fourth place finish in the 100 backstroke. She was followed by Lexi Duffy (57.62), Liu (57.95) and Conley (58.99) in fifth, sixth and eighth, respectively. Szuromi also came through with a victory in the B Final with a time of 58.10. Duffy, Wong and Liu moved into second, third and fourth all-time on the program leaderboard.

The Garnet look to maintain their lead on the final day of the Centennial Conference Championships. The prelim session begins at 10 a.m. with the evening session scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
