Women’s Swimming Sweeps Opening Relays to Begin Championship Defense

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The No. 16 Swarthmore College women's swim team swept the opening two events of the Centennial Conference Championships on Thursday evening. The Garnet currently sit in first place with a six-point lead over Gettysburg College.

The reigning back-to-back Centennial Champions opened the meet in record fashion with several broken records and a pair of NCAA B cut marks. The Garnet set a new championship, conference, pool and program record in the 200 medley relay, while also setting a pool and program record in 800 freestyle relay.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The 200 medley relay of Kaja Arusha, Sophie Rotival, Ashley Wong and Genine Collins captured gold in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:42.71. The Garnet relay broke the championship, conference, pool and program records to knock off last year's defending champion. The quartet also bested the NCAA B cut time by over two seconds as they posted the 11th fastest time in the nation.

- The 800 freestyle relay of Quinn Weygandt, Elle Anthony, Lauren Rohde and Kate Hallmark placed first overall with a time of 7:33.95. The Garnet captured their fourth-straight gold medal in the event with a pool record, program record and NCAA B cut time. Rohde touched the wall first on the third leg to put Swarthmore ahead in the event. Hallmark then closed out the race with a dominant final leg to win the event by three seconds. Weygandt set a 200 freestyle program record of 1:51.70 and beat the NCAA B cut time to open the race.

UP NEXT
The Garnet return to the pool tomorrow for the second day of the Centennial Conference Championships. The prelim session begins at 10 a.m. with the evening session scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
