No. 16 Women’s Swimming Opens Championship Season with Swat Invite

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 16 Swarthmore College women's swim team opened the championship season with its final home meet of the season on Saturday. The Garnet swimmers were joined by Franklin & Marshall College as competitors looked to end their seasons on a high note.

In total, six Garnet swimmers combined for 12 lifetime bests, while nine swimmers recorded 22 season-best marks. Mirabel Fernald and Sophia Ulvestad highlighted the event with top-10, all-time swims in the 200 butterfly. Fernald moved into eighth all-time in program history, while Ulvestad was tenth.

Vivian Guo, Cara Lee and Laura Strachan were celebrated for their four years of dedication to the program as they swam in their final collegiate meet for the Garnet.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ulvestad led a Garnet top-four sweep in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.58, while Fernald was second with a lifetime best of 59.73. Sophie Rodner (1:00.22) and Cara Lee (1:00.69) followed with third and fourth place finishes, respectively.

- Madeline Fox was victorious in the 400 IM with a 4:43.35 finish. Guo then followed in second place with a 4:53.03 effort.

- Cindy Wang and Sophia Caceres claimed the top-two spots in a tightly-contested 100 breaststroke. Wang touched the wall at 1:09.01, while Caceres followed at 1:09.42.

- Georgi Mathews led a Swarthmore trio with a time of 1:55.33 in the 200 freestyle. Ursula Horn trailed in second place with a 1:56.00 finish, while Fox touched the wall at 2:02.31. Horn posted a lifetime best in the event.

- Laura Strachan was the lone competitor in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:10.97. Wang was also the lone swimmer in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:12.88 to set a new lifetime best.

- Fernald paced a Swarthmore duo in the 100 butterfly. The first-year touched the wall first at 58.98 for a lifetime best, while Caceres followed at 59.60. Fernald showcased her improvement throughout the season with four lifetime bests on the weekend.

- Guo swam to a time of 18:28.13 as the lone competitor in the 1650 freestyle. The time marked a season best for the senior.

- Mathews took home another top finish with a time of 53.22 in the 100 freestyle. Horn (53.72) and Lee (54.97) rounded out the top-three for Swarthmore, while Rodner placed ahead of the Diplomats with a time of 56.14. Mathews just missed out on a program top-10 finish with her first-place mark, while Horn recorded a lifetime best.

- Wang earned her second win with a 2:26.81 mark in the 200 breaststroke. Fox then followed with a lifetime best of 2:29.32, while Caceres touched the wall at 2:29.50 for third place.

- Fernald was victorious in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:08.97, while Ulvestad followed behind with a 2:09.89 effort. Fernald moved into eighth all-time in program history with her time, while Ulvestad followed with the 10th fastest time.

The Garnet will use the next couple weeks to prepare for the Centennial Conference Championships on February 22-25.
