GETTYSBURG, Pa - The No. 24 Swarthmore College men's swimming team earned a split to open the 2024-25 season at the Centennial Quad on Saturday. The Garnet outmatched McDaniel College, 219-38, but lost to Gettysburg College by just one point, 131-130.
Cami Wilson won all four of his events to headline Swarthmore's men. The sprinter was a member of both first-place relays, while earning top finishes in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Danny Castle was also exceptional for the Garnet to account for three victories. The sophomore won both the 100 and 200 freestyle, and was a member of the first-place 400 freestyle relay. Castle also fell just one-tenth of a second away from becoming a four-time winner with a narrow defeat in the 200 IM.
Cole Griscavage earned three victories on the afternoon. The senior played a role in both relay wins, while earning his own top finish in the 100 breaststroke.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet got off to an excellent start by claiming two of the top three finishes in the 200 medley relay. The team of Matvey Ivanov, Dylan Ling, Wilson and Griscavage led Swarthmore to a top finish with a time of 1:33.69. The Garnet also took third overall in the event to beat out the Bullets B squad.
- Theodore Kim placed third overall in the 1000 freestyle behind a pair of Gettysburg swimmers. The sophomore touched the wall at 10:20.42.
- Castle began his sophomore campaign with a victory in the 200 freestyle. He held off a pair of Gettysburg swimmers with a time of 1:42.54.
- Jacob Sherman took third place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.21. Later in the meet, he repeated as third overall in the 200 backstroke at 1:54.97.
- Griscavage led the charge with a top finish in the 100 breaststroke. The senior touched the wall at 58.67, while Dylan Ling followed in second at 59.53 to narrowly beat out a Bullets swimmer.
- The Garnet claimed second and third in the 200 butterfly. Sam Peterson finished as the runner up with a 1:59.90 mark, while Tim Fan followed at 2:00.15 in third place.
- Wilson continued to impress in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.80 to finish first overall. Jake Zarak was third in the event with a time of 21.98 to set a new personal best.
- Castle tallied his second individual victory with a top finish in the 100 freestyle. The sophomore outlasted a pair of Gettysburg swimmers with a time of 46.79.
- Ling touched the wall first with a time of 2:14.43 in the 200 breaststroke. Will Trone followed in second with a 2:15.82 mark.
- Ham Williams-Tracy placed third in the 500 freestyle. The senior finished at 4:58.11 behind a pair of Gettysburg swimmers.
- Wilson took home another individual win with the top finish in the 100 butterfly. The junior raced to a 49.37 finish, while Fan took third at 52.29.
- Castle fell just short of his third individual win with a tight finish in the 200 IM. The sophomore settled for a runner-up finish with a time of 1:55.71, which was a tenth of a second behind Gettysburg's top finisher.
- The Garnet swept the relay events with a top finish in the 400 freestyle. The team of Wilson, Griscavage, Benton Greenberg and Castle won the event with a time of 3:06.52. However, the Bullets managed to escape with two of the top-three finishes in a meet where every point mattered.
