Softball Offense Rallies in Opening Day Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Swarthmore College softball team opened its 2023 season with a double-header sweep versus Anna Maria College on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet exploded for a combined 25 runs on the afternoon as they won the opener 14-2 and edged out a 11-10 victory in game two. 

Iris Barone hit 3-for-6 on the day with an impressive debut performance for the Garnet. The first-year set the tone at the top of the lineup with four runs scored on the afternoon. 

Brooke Coneeny slugged a team-high six combined RBIs for both games. The senior helped break the first game open with a three-RBI double in a big fifth inning for Swarthmore. She then added a two-run double and a sacrifice fly in the second game. 



GAME 1: SWARTHMORE 14, ANNA MARIA 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Barone opened her collegiate career with a leadoff double to start the game. The first-year came home on a wild pitch to plate the opening run after a Caterina Reed single advanced Barone to third base.

- Meg Ozawa retired the side with a quick opening frame to start her season. The defending Centennial Pitcher of the Year then escaped the second inning to preserve the team's early lead. However, Anna Maria answered with two runs in the third inning to take the lead.

- The Garnet exploded for 13 runs in the fifth inning to run away with the victory. The first nine batters who stepped to the plate all scored for the Garnet in the inning. Barone opened the frame with her second hit of the game. Swarthmore then loaded the bases for Brooke Coneeny, who cleared the bags with a three-run double. Kate Hart then drove in a pair with a double before Jordan Jackson plated the sixth run with a single. 

- After batting around without recording an out, Barone recorded the first out on a sacrifice fly for her first career RBI. Alexandra Simon drove home a pair of runs with a double for her second hit of the inning. Olivia McClammy then added another run with a pinch-hit single and later came home to score on a Avery McClure pinch hit sacrifice fly for the game's final run, 14-2.

GAME 2: SWARTHMORE 11, ANNA MARIA 10
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Anna Marie scored one run in the top of the inning, Barone sparked a first inning rally with a lead off walk as the Garnet plated three in the opening frame. Simon drove home the first run with a sacrifice flyout, while Coneeny continued her big day at the dish with a two-run double, 3-1

- Anna Maria broke things open with a nine-run second inning to take a 10-3 lead. Flannery McFadden started a three-run second inning with a one-out single to help bring the Garnet back. She later came home to score on a passed ball. Coneeny added another run with a sacrifice fly before the Garnet added one more on an error, 10-6.

- The Garnet kept chipping away at their deficit. McClammy plated a runner in the third with a single to right field. Swarthmore then added two in the fourth with a Barone double to pull within one run, 10-9. 

- Swarthmore took back the lead in the sixth inning with a pair of runs. After back-to-back singles from Maya Estrera and Barone, McFadden plated the tying run with a single while the winning run touched home on an error, 11-10. 

UP NEXT
The Garnet (2-0) return to action on Monday versus University of Pittsburgh-Bradford and Rockford.
