Mabbs Brothers Combine for Nine Goals in Men’s Lacrosse Opener

Box Score CHESTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team took it to Widener University, 19-7, their season opener on Saturday afternoon. 

Rex Mabbs and Von Mabbs combined for nine goals and 10 points on the afternoon. Rex led the team with five goals, while Von added four goals and one assist. Cooper Bucklan also had an incredible performance with a career-high four goals on just five shots.

Ryan Chambliss put together a multi-goal effort with a pair of goals, while George Schoettle, Danny Lowe, Carter Strauch and Nolan Ohrman all added a score. 

Shane Nachshen held down the defensive end of the field with 15 saves for a .682 save percentage in the victory. Will Bernstien also set the tone with a dominating performance on faceoffs as he went 18-of-24.



HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ohrman opened the scoring with the first goal of the season with 11:54 remaining in the first quarter. Rex Mabbs also added his first-career tally, which was sandwiched in between a pair of Pride goals, 2-2. The Garnet controlled the rest of the quarter as they strung together three-straight goals from Lowe, Bucklan and Rex Mabbs to take a three-goal advantage, 5-2.

- The Garnet carried momentum into the second quarter with goals from Von and Rex Mabbs to open the stanza. Bucklan then added another goal moments later, while Chambliss found the back of the net for the team's seventh-unanswered goal, 9-2. Widener stopped the bleeding with a much-needed score, before Bucklan got the goal back before halftime to complete an early hat trick, 10-3. 

- Rex Mabbs added his fourth goal to open the scoring in the second half. Von Mabbs then went back-to-back with consecutive scores to take a 10-goal advantage over the Pride. Widener began to chip away with three unanswered goals, but the Garnet responded with goals from Rex Mabbs and Carter Strauch to end the third quarter, 15-6.

- Swarthmore put the game to rest with three-unanswered goals to open the fourth quarter. Chambliss added the opening goal, which was followed by scores from Bucklan and George Schoettle. Widener managed just one goal in the period, before Von Mabbs ended the game with his fourth goal of the game, 19-7.
