SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore College baseball senior Matteo Sollecito was selected to Great Britain's taxi squad roster for the upcoming 2023 World Baseball Classic, announced on Thursday night.

Sollecito earned an invitation to attend mini camp with the Great Britain squad in Arizona ahead of the upcoming World Baseball Classic. He will serve as a reserve with a chance to be added to the active roster for the tournament.

Great Britain's roster features a number of current and former Major League players, including the Dodgers Trayce Thompson and former Phillies Vance Worley and Darnell Sweeney.

"It's an honor and a privilege to represent something bigger than myself or baseball," said Sollecito. "It's the country where I threw my first baseball in and there a lot of people on that coaching staff who I owe my success and transfer to American baseball to. It's was my beginning and I'm really lucky to be selected to play for a nation that I constantly feel the need to give back to."

The London native started eight games in 10 appearances last season for the Garnet. The right-hander posted a 4-1 record with a 4.01 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 24.2 innings of work. 

Sollecito played a significant role in the Garnet's late-season success as he helped stabilize the pitching staff. Sollecito saved his best start of the season for the Centennial Championship opening round, where he tossed four-shutout innings in a no-hit effort. 

The senior is poised to play a pivotal role in the team's starting rotation as the Garnet prepare to open their season versus Lycoming College on Friday, Feb. 24.
