GETTYSBURG, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Swimming scored 718.5 points over the course of the four-day 2020 Centennial Conference Championship and finished in third place, 84 points behind eventual champion Franklin & Marshall College.
For the third season in a row, Swarthmore provided the conference's Most Outstanding Rookie Performer. The award, previously given to Alec Menzer in 2018 and Jeremy Rockaway in 2019, was designated to Ben Freeman who won bronze in three events. Freeman led off Sunday with a bronze in the 1,650 free with an NCAA B cut time of 16:07.03. Classmate Alex Hatzikos took fifth in 16:21.59. Riley McLaughlin and Jonathan Odim placed 10th and 14th in the event.
Five Garnet swimmers reached the finals for the 200 back. Dylan Torrance and Hatzikos made the podium with fifth-place (1:53.19) and seventh-place (1:59.80) finishes. Michael Yan, McLaughlin and Patrick Kyaw finished 12th, 13th and 16th.
In the 100 free, Swarthmore had two medalists: Alec Menzer, who got silver (45.38 seconds), and Alec Lawless who tied for bronze (45.48 seconds). Ethan Bergmann placed eighth in 47.48.
Horace Shew registered a B cut time of 2:04.01 in the 200 breaststroke and set a new school record. Andrew Sung took eighth in 2:13.18. Luke Wang and Steven Chen went first and second in the consolation heat of the 200 breaststroke.
In the 200 fly, Lonnie Chien and Jeff Mun took to the podium with a bronze medal for Chien (1:54.42) and a sixth-place showing for Mun (1:57.82).
The Garnet concluded the championship with a silver medal in the 400 free relay. The team of Freeman, Lawless, Bergmann and Menzer shattered the previous record of 3:02.91 with a new school record of 3:00.82. The team earned a B cut, the sixth of the championship weekend.
Swarthmore now awaits the announcing of invitations to nationals.
