Box Score 2 BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- No. 21-ranked Swarthmore College Volleyball swept two matches on Friday in Bethlehem, Pa., defeating Alvernia University and Wesley College in three sets each on the first day of the season.
This marks the first time since 2014 that the Garnet won their first two matches of the season and the first time since 2011 that they swept their first two matches.
In the first set of the second match, Swarthmore senior defensive specialist
Sarah Girard became the program's all-time leader in digs. She now has 1,601 digs in her career.
Match One: Swarthmore 3, Alvernia 0
The Garnet improved as the match went on, defeating the Golden Wolves 25-23, 25-12, 25-9.
Junior
Mehra den Braven led Swarthmore with 11 kills to accompany her .409 hitting percentage. She also had a team-high four aces on 10 serve attempts.
Sophomore
Alyssa Nathan recorded 27 assists working as the team's setter in all three sets.
Match Two: Swarthmore 3, Wesley 0
Swarthmore also took care of the Wolverines comfortably by scores of 25-9, 25-17, 25-19.
Junior
Emma Morgan-Bennett had three solo blocks to compile eight kills with a team-best .800 hitting percentage.
Girard had 19 digs in the match. Den Braven and sophomore
Liz Conca had 10 each.
The Garnet recorded just 11 errors in each of their two matches. The last time they recorded less than 14 was on Oct. 10 of last season when they had four against Bryn Mawr at Tarble Pavillion.
Swarthmore is back in action for the final day of the Moravian Greyhound premiere on Saturday as it takes on Moravian College and Baldwin Wallace University at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
