LANCASTER, Pa.—After Saturday's second day of the Centennial Conference Championship, Swarthmore College Women's Swimming kept its foothold in second place with 370 points.
Sophomore Emily Bley raced to a gold medal in the 400-yard individual medley, winning by one one-hundredth of a second. Bley blasted off the blocks with the fastest 100-yard among the racers and then held on for a total time of 4:37.45.
In addition to Bley's gold, Swarthmore's Liz Staton won silver in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.59, breaking a school record that stood since 1996.
Swarthmore's relay teams earned bronze medals in the 800 free and 200 medley. Selina Ye, Staton, Ashley Hwang and Sayaka Vaules led off the evening slate with a time of 1:47.76 in the 200 medley, narrowly eclipsing the school's previous record of 1:47.79. In the 800 free, the Garnet squad of Clare Cushing, Bley, Sophie Moody and Scout Clark clocked in at 7:54.89 to take third place.
Other notable finishes for the Garnet on Saturday included three other top-eight finishes. Clark swam to fifth in the 400 IM, Cushing came in fourth in the 200 free and Hwang came in eighth in the 100 breaststroke.
Swarthmore returns to the pool for day three of the championship on Sunday at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. looking for their highest finish since finishing in the top three in 2011.
