FULL RESULTS
FREDERICKSBURG, Va.—The Swarthmore College women's tennis team capped off the fall portion of its season over the weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Tournament hosted on the campus of Mary Washington.
In the championship doubles draw, the duo of junior
Maria Cuervo and sophomore
Julia Gokhberg scored a big upset with a 9-7 win over Carnegie Mellon's Minami Makino and Jamie Vizelman, the third-seeded pair at the tournament. Cuervo and Gokhberg fought hard in the round of 16, but ultimately fell 8-5 to Hannah Archer and Lily Horsley of Washington & Lee.
Freshman
Emma Kassan also made it to the round of 16 in the championship singles draw, winning two matches in the process. She opened with a 6-0, 6-1 rout of Dickinson's Olivia Shea and grinded out a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win over Julie Lazer of Washington College before falling 6-4, 6-4 to Hopkins' Sophia Strickland.
Gokhberg, Cuervo and freshman
Shirline Wee also won their respective first round matches in the championship singles bracket while
Alli Wong and
Arya Jemal were handed narrow defeats. In the Blue 1 doubles draw, the duo of Jemal and
Ashley Gao reached the quarterfinals with an 8-3 victory.
The women's tennis team begins it spring campaign looking to qualify for the Centennial Conference playoffs for the seventh time in eight seasons.
