Division I Portland State Tops No. 30 Garnet

VANCOUVER, WASH.–Playing against Division I opponent Portland State on Tuesday, March 8, the 30th-ranked Swarthmore College men's tennis team (3-3) fell by a 5-2 decision.

Playing under D1 rules, the Vikings captured the doubles point with a sweep, despite a hard-fought, 6-7 (4) match from junior Thomas Vernier and freshman Evan Han at second doubles.

In singles action, James Hahn overcame a first-set deficit for a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) victory at No. 6 singles and sophomore Yosuke Higashi won at the No. 3 spot after a retirement by his opponent. Fifth singles player Matt Hirsh was edged out in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 0-1 (4-10) as Mark Fallati and John Larkin played tough in their first sets at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively.

The Garnet play another Division I foe in Seattle University on Thursday, March 10 to conclude their spring break slate.
