Women's Swimming Fifth After Solid Second Day At Championships

GETTYSBURG, Pa.--At the conclusion of the second night of competition at the Centennial Conference Championship, the Swarthmore Garnet Women stand in fifth place, one point behind Dickinson College for fourth place. Along the way, the team added a new program record in the 400 individual medley and dozens of best times on their way to another successful evening.

The women kicked off their night with a strong showing in the 200-yard medley relay as the team of Erica Flor, Maggie Eberts, Sarah Solomon, and Rose Ridder raced to a seventh-place finish in a time of 1:50.08, which is the fifth-fastest time in program history. Swarthmore's B relay team of Jillian Haywood, Eva Winter, Amelia Tomei and Sophie Moody added an 11th place finish in a time of 1:50.83, which is the sixth-fastest time in program history.

Emily Bley kept the momentum going as she swam to a program record on her way to a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard IM in an NCAA B Cut time of 4:36.13. Scout Clark (4:49.63) also had a strong showing, adding a personal best time and 13th place finish for the Garnet.
In the next event of the evening, Solomon (59.23) and Ashley Hwang (59.63) added fifth and seventh place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly. Solomon's morning swim was a personal best and Hwang's morning swim was a season best. Moody (1:00.91), Tomei (1:01.00), and Sierra Bienz (1:01.32) narrowly missed the consolation finals with morning swims that placed them 17th, 18th, and 19th, respectively. Moody and Bienz notched personal records and Tomei a season-best time. Abby Byrne (1:02.45) and Margaret Luo (1:02.67) added 23rd and 24th place finishes in the event with season-best times.

During the morning session, Briana Schoenek (2:00.51) and Diane Lee (2:04.01) finished in 18th and 26th place in the 200 Yard Freestyle. Schoenek swam a best college time and Lee swam a season best.

Five women scored points for Swarthmore in the next event, the 100 Yard Breaststroke. The quintet of Maggie Eberts (1:07.41), Eva Winter (1:07.92), Liz Staton (1:08.17), Ashley Hwang (1:08.84), and Sierra Bienz (1:11.24) finished fifth, seventh, eighth, 10th, and 16th respectively. Eberts, Staton, and Winter all swam lifetime best times in the morning and the trio now own the third, fourth, and fifth fastest times in Swarthmore history in the event. Hwang swam a season best, and Bienz swam a lifetime best time.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Flor (1:00.58) finished in 10th place for the Garnet with a season best time. Haywood (1:03.06), Sydney Andersen (1:05.47), and Ridder (1:06.39) also swam the event in the morning session finishing in 19th, 27th, and 28th place. Haywood and Andersen notched season-best times and Ridder went a lifetime best.

The women finished strong in the final event of the evening, the 800-yard freestyle relay. The relay team of Bley, Moody, Solomon, and Hwang finished in sixth place with a time of 7:59.92. The Garnet's B relay team of Haywood, Schoenek, Clark, and Lee finished in 14th place with a time of 8:10.87.

After two nights of swimming, the Swarthmore women are in fifth place with 277 points. The Garnet are within one point of Dickinson College for fourth place. The Garnet return to action for the final day of competition on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at Bullets Pool.
