GETTYSBURG, Pa,--The Swarthmore College men's swimming team is on the move from third place after night one to second place after night two and is now within 20 points of leader Gettysburg. The team added five new program records and dozens of best times on their way to another successful evening.
For the second night in a row, the men began the session with a program record swim, this time in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of
Charles Yang,
Alejandro Hernandez, Jeff Tse and
Andrew Steele finished in first place with a time of 1:32.56, besting the program record set last year. Swarthmore's B relay team of
Liam Fitzstevens,
Henry Wilson,
Tony Wang, and
David Ranshous also scored points for the team with a ninth place finish with a time of 1:35.10. This time, excepting the team record set in 2015 and the new record set by the A relay this weekend, is the fastest time in program history.
Liam Fitzstevens kept the good times rolling for the Garnet by adding another hard-fought victory for the Garnet in the 400-yard IM. Fitzstevens smashed his own program record, set a new meet and conference record, and achieved an NCAA B-Cut with his time of 4:01.32.
Jason Fu (4:13.54) won the consolation final with a personal best time and the fifth-fastest time in program history to finish ninth.
Kyle Campbell (4:20.69) also scored points for the Garnet with his 13th place finish and lifetime best time.
CJ Cling (4:26.68) swam in the preliminaries, finishing in 20th place.
After two events and two victories, the duo of
Andrew Steele (50.30) and Jeff Tse (50.92) did not disappoint with a one-two finish in the third event of the day to make it four-straight victories for the Garnet (including the final event of Friday night). The day saw season-best times for both and lifetime best for Tse; the pair now own the top two times in the event in program history.
Tony Wang (53.59) and
David Ranshous (53.74) also achieved season best times in the event, finishing 23rd and 25th.
At the conclusion of the 100 Fly, the Garnet had closed a 38-point gap with defending champion Gettysburg to 4.
In the 200-yard freestyle,
Chris Smith (1:43.55), Steve Sekula (1:45.39), and
Michael Lutzker (1:45.85) competed for the Garnet finishing in fourth, eighth, and 12th, respectively. Smith notched a lifetime-best time and new program record time, Lutzker landed a season-best, and Sekula tallied a season best in his morning swim of 1:43.82. Smith and Sekula now own the top-two times in program history; Lutzker's time puts him eighth in program history.
Following the 200 Free,
Alejandro Hernandez,
Henry Wilson, and
Jerry Gu competed for the Garnet in the 100-yard breaststroke. In a very tight, back-and-forth race, Hernandez fought his way to a second-place finish with a new program and personal record time of 56.68. Wilson (58.67) finished in eighth place with a new lifetime best time and the sixth-fastest time in program history; Gu (1:00.98) finished in 15th with a season best time in the morning session.
Jeff Tse was back in the 100-yard backstroke after a short break following his second-place finish in the 100 fly accompanied by teammates
Charles Yang,
Ben Hsiung, and
Tony Wang. Tse (51.38) kept to the team's winning ways by taking home first place with Yang (52.56) in fourth, Hsiung (54.83) in 15th, and Wang (54.88) in 16th. Tse and Yang swam lifetime best times during the morning session and Hsiung and Wang swam season best times. During the morning session,
Kurtis Swartz (55.57) swam to a lifetime best time to finish 17th.
In the final event of the evening, the 800-yard freestyle relay, the Swarthmore men added another victory and program record to their tally for the day. The team of Sekula, Fitzstevens, Lutzker, and Smith won a close-fought race over Gettysburg in a time of 6:57.78, besting the program record by nearly seven seconds. Swarthmore's team of Hsiung, Cling, Campbell, and Fu finished the event in 10th place in a time of 7:08.98, which is the sixth-fastest time in program history.
As day two came to a close, the Swarthmore men had amassed one conference record, five program records, and five victories in the seven contested events. They had also closed the points gap with Gettysburg from 38 to 20 as they moved into second place. The Garnet return to action for the final day of competition on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at Bullets Pool.
