COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Swimming held off the Ursinus College Bears on Wednesday 137-125 to improve to 4-0 this season in Centennial Conference dual meets.
The Garnet had first place in nine of the 14 events, and three of those wins came from senior
Andrew Steele.
Liam Fitzstevens had a pair of first-place finishes and
Alejandro Hernandez and
Steven Chen added the other individual wins. The Garnet took the first relay of the day with
Charles Yang, Hernandez, Steele and
Chris Smith combining for a time of 1:36.76.
Steele sprinted to victory in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races with times of 21.5 and 48.06 seconds. Steele earned his other win in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall for the final time in 53.29 seconds.
Fitzstevens took the 200 IM in 2:00.64 and was even faster in the 200 backstroke, coming in at 1:56.08.
In the 100 breaststroke, Hernandez edged the competition by .27 seconds. Hernandez had been fourth after the first lap but turned on the jets for lap two, closing with a 32.01 lap and a total time of 1:01.13.
Chen, a freshman, earned the win in the 200 breast stroke with a time of 2:16.75.
Swarthmore, now 4-0, returns to the pool on Dec. 2 at Gettysburg College.
