Box Score ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Swarthmore College softball team dropped a Centennial Conference game to Muhlenberg by a 6-1 score on Tuesday, Apr. 7 at Cedarcreek Field. The first game of a scheduled doubleheader was called with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning due to rain, while the nightcap was postponed to a later date which is still to be determined.
Swarthmore (4-11, CC 0-7) got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Senior
Emma Madarasz singled to third base and was sacrificed over to second by classmate
Laurie Sellars. After consecutive singles by senior
Chelsea Matzko and sophomore
Sara Planthaber loaded the bases with only one out, junior
Christen Boas Hayes hit a sacrifice fly to center which plated Madarasz.
Muhlenberg (9-7, CC 5-2), however, came back with a vengeance by scoring three times in the bottom of the first and twice in the second. Amie DeFeo recorded a two-run double, and Nicole Iannarone drove in a pair on a single to center during the stretch to put the hosts ahead by four. Iannarone then capped the scoring by doubling in the fourth and coming home on a wild pitch.
Kelsey Jones picked up the victory for Muhlenberg after giving up six hits and one run which was earned over five frames. She fanned three and issued only one walk. Boas Hayes of Swarthmore suffered the loss by surrendering six hits and five runs, which were all earned in just 1.1 frames.
Swarthmore returns home to host Penn State Brandywine for a twinbill on Thursday, Apr. 9 at 3:00 p.m.
