LANCASTER, Pa. – The Swarthmore College baseball team wrapped up Centennial Conference play with a pair of losses to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, Apr. 25 at Caplan Field. The Diplomats swept the Garnet by scores of 6-1 and 5-2.

In the opener, Franklin & Marshall (25-10, CC 13-5) got on the board in the second inning when Brian Erb scored on a wild pitch before tacking on one more run in the third and another three in the fourth by taking advantage of Garnet defensive miscues to roll to a commanding 5-0 lead.

Swarthmore was able to score in the top of the fifth when sophomore Steven Matos-Torres came home on an error by the F&M shortstop, but the Diplomats recovered and tacked on one more run in the bottom half of the same frame when Casey Bulik hit a sacrifice bunt. The run came in on a throwing error by the Garnet pitcher.

Alex Guerra went 5.2 innings without yielding an earned run to pick up the victory for F&M and improve to 5-1 this spring. He struck out three and did not issue a walk. Aidan Miller suffered the loss and dropped to 3-2 for Swarthmore after giving up five runs, including one earned, and four hits. He struck out two and walked four while the defense committed five errors over the course of the game.

The Diplomats picked up right where they left off in the nightcap, scoring three times in the bottom of the first and never looking back. Freshman Cal Barnett-Mayotte drove in a run in the third and scored in the seventh, but it was not enough to put the Garnet over the top.

Brandon Theriault earned the victory on the mound for F&M to earn his first win of the season by hurling two scoreless innings of relief. Freshman Max Kassan went the distance for Swarthmore and suffered the setback to drop his record to 2-1. He gave up 11 hits and five runs, including four earned,  but showed great control by not issuing a walk. He struck out three.

Swarthmore (17-17, CC 4-14), which has dropped 12 straight conference games and 13 of its last 14 overall, will look to end its 2015 campaign on a high note when it visits Gwynedd Mercy on Monday, Apr. 27 at 4 p.m. A victory would guarantee the Garnet a winning season for the third time in as many years under the direction of head coach Matt Midkiff.
