Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College baseball team dropped its final home game of the season to Ursinus by a 12-6 score on Friday, Apr. 24 at Clothier Field.
After
Luke Alventosa retired the side in order to start the game, Swarthmore had a golden opportunity to get on the board first by loading the bases with nobody out in the bottom half of the opening frame. But after sophomores
Wesley Fishburn and
Ryan Burnett singled and senior
Scoop Ruxin drew a walk, Ursinus ace Sean Pisik got out of the major jam by inducing a lineout to short and fanning the next two Garnet hitters to keep the game scoreless.
Ursinus (17-13, CC 7-9) then jumped out to a 5-0 lead by scoring twice in the third and three times in the fourth, which was capped by a two-run single to right center by Travis Kozak. The Bears continued hitting the ball hard and deep and deep throughout the middle innings and found themselves ahead 12-3 after the top of the sixth.
Trailing by nine, Swarthmore did not give up and attempted to chip away at the deficit. Junior
David Wolfson hit an RBI single up the middle to score senior
Zach Powell in the sixth and freshman
Cal Barnett-Mayotte belted the ball to right to plate senior
Trevor Shepherd in the eighth. After fouling a ball hard off his foot, freshman
Joseph Jackson provided fireworks by hitting his first home run to deep left field.
The Garnet had their chances to continue closing the gap, but reliever Steve DiStefano quickly recovered by punching out Powell and forcing sophomore
Steven Matos-Torres to hit into a fielder's choice to end the game.
Pisik picked up the win for the Bears and improved to 5-1 by throwing eight innings. He gave up five runs, including four earned, and 12 hits while striking out six and issuing one walk.
In his last appearance at Clothier Field, Alventosa suffered the tough loss and dropped his record to 1-4 this season after yielding nine runs, which were all earned, on 11 hits over 4.1 frames. He also recorded four strikeouts. Senior
Samer Nashed was a bright spot out of the bullpen by throwing two scoreless innings of relief to close out the game.
Swarthmore (17-15, CC 4-12) wraps up Centennial Conference play tomorrow afternoon when it visits Franklin & Marshall for a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m.
