ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Battling sleet and harsh weather conditions, the Swarthmore College softball team fell to Muhlenberg by a 5-2 score in a five-inning game on Thursday, Apr. 23 at Cedarcreek Field.
 
With freshman Frankie Ponziani commanding the circle, Swarthmore scored the first two runs of the contest by plating one in the first inning and another in the second. Ponziani helped herself out by slapping an RBI single up the middle that plated senior Chelsea Matzko before Emma Madarasz followed with a double to left to drive in freshman Emily Bowman.
 
But after getting blanked through three innings, Muhlenberg (15-13, CC 9-5) got all the offense it needed by tallying all five of its runs in the fourth. Alyssa Schell and Amie DeFeo each blasted two-run singles to give the Mules all the run support they needed to win a game that was called early in the middle of the fifth.
 
Kelsey Jones went the distance in the circle and picked up the victory for Muhlenberg. She gave up seven hits and two runs while striking out five and issuing one walk. Ponziani suffered the loss after giving up five hits and five runs over four frames. None of the runs she surrendered were earned.
 
Swarthmore (5-17, CC 1-11) visits Ursinus for a twinbill on Saturday, Apr. 25 beginning at 1 p.m.
