Box Score ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Swarthmore College softball team dropped a non-conference game to Rosemont by a 6-3 decision on Tuesday, Apr. 21.
Despite the loss, several Garnet players had career performances. Freshman
Frankie Ponziani set a career high with three hits, while classmates
Mary Olesnavich and
Emily Bowman recorded two apiece to match career bests. Newcomer
Jane Blicher, another freshman, recorded her first-ever RBI and sophomore
Sara Planthaber had a three-hit day.
Swarthmore quickly got on the board in the top of the first when Planthaber doubled in senior
Laurie Sellars, who reached on an error earlier in the frame. Rosemont (4-23), however, plated the equalizer in the bottom half of the same inning and tallied five more runs in the second to take control. Dani Lelie and Gianna Pedone each drove in two runs to pace the offense.
Trailing by five, the Garnet did not give up and began slicing away at the deficit by scoring one run in the fourth when Blicher hit a sacrifice fly that scored Bowman. Ponziani then belted a single to the gap in the right center an inning later to send home senior
Chelsea Matzko, but that was as close as the visitors would come the rest of the way.
Nikki Maurer picked up the victory for Rosemont and improved her record to 2-10. She gave up nine hits and three runs, including one that was earned, over 4.1 frames. Swarthmore's Olesnavich suffered the loss and fell to 3-6 after giving up seven hits and six runs which were all earned in two innings. Ponziani threw four shutout innings of relief and fanned six. She also yielded just one hit and did not issue a walk.
Swarthmore (5-16) resumes Centennial Conference play when it visits Muhlenberg for a single game on Thursday, Apr. 23 at 5 p.m.
