Box Score

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Sophomore Wesley Fishburn hit his second home run of the season as the Swarthmore College baseball team used 14 hits to pick up a 14-10 win over Haverford on Thursday, April 2. The win marks the first time that Swarthmore has swept the regular-season series with the Fords in 15 years.

Fishburn and John Lim led the Garnet with three hits apiece while Lim and Ryan Burnett each scored a team-high three runs on the afternoon.

After two scoreless innings, the Garnet put the first runs on the board with three in the top of the third. Fishburn's double drove in Cal Barnett-Mayotte and an error by the Haverford first baseman allowed Burnett to reach first as Fishburn scored. A double by Lim brought Burnett home to give the Garnet a 3-0 advantage.

Haverford used a four-run fourth inning to take the lead and held its one-run margin until the top of the sixth frame when Swarthmore scored three runs on four hits. Lim hit a leadoff single and scored after Scoop Ruxin doubled to left field. A wild pitch allowed Ruxin to cross the plate and an RBI-double by Matt Palmer drove in Roy Walker to give Swarthmore a lead it did not relinquish.

Five more runs came in the seventh after seniors Danny McMahon and Gregory Cox hit back-to-back two-RBI doubles to clear the bases. Another wild pitch gave the Garnet a run and an 11-4 lead entering the bottom of the frame.

Swarthmore increased its margin to double digits in the eighth behind Fishburn's solo shot to right field and a single by Roy Walker. Haverford, however, did not give up without a fight and chipped away at the Garnet lead with four runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth, but fell short one day after losing by a 12-10 score.

Jackson Ramey earned the win as the pitcher of record with strikeouts and four earned runs in 3.1 innings.

The team looks to continue its conference winning streak in Saturday's home doubleheader against Gettysburg scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
