Box Score 2 SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College softball team dropped two Centennial Conference contests to rival Haverford on Saturday, Apr. 18 at Clothier Field. The visiting Fords claimed an 8-0 win in game one and took the nightcap by an 8-1 score.
In game one, Haverford jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. In the bottom of the second, Swarthmore put a runner in scoring position with one out as
Sara Planthaber advanced to second after a walk by
Frankie Ponziani, but two consecutive strikeouts from Haverford's Sara Tauriello ended the threat.
The Fords used four hits and a Garnet fielding miscue to tack on two more runs in the third for a 4-0 advantage. Swarthmore came back in the bottom of the frame with singles by seniors
Emma Madarasz and
Laurie Sellars, but were unable to bring them home. The visitors closed out the game with a four-run fourth inning and blanked the Garnet over the next two frames to clinch the 8-0 win.
Tauriello picked up the win for Haverford and freshman
Mary Olesnavich fell to 3-5 on the season.
Swarthmore's offensive struggles continued in game two as the team only managed one hit and one run. The Fords scored seven unanswered runs over the first four innings, but the Garnet showed signs of life in the bottom of the fourth frame. Madarasz led off with a single and advanced all the way to third on an error by the left fielder. Three batters later, she crossed the plate after Planthaber reached on a fielder's choice. Unfortunately for Swarthmore, the team did not reach base again for the remainder of the game.
In the circle, Haverford's Emily Winesett earned her 10
th win of the season in the complete-game effort and freshman
Frankie Ponziani dropped to 1-4.
Swarthmore returns to competition on Tuesday, Apr. 21 for a non-conference doubleheader at Rosemont College. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
