Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – A five-run seventh inning from the visiting Muhlenberg Mules sank the Swarthmore College baseball team (17-11, CC 4-8) on Friday, Apr. 17 as the Garnet fell by a 9-3 score.
Sophomore
Wesley Fishburn had a team-high three hits as
Gregory Cox and
David Wolfson chipped in two apiece. Swarthmore collected 12 hits to Muhlenberg's 11, but were held scoreless over the final six innings of the game.
The Garnet jumped out to an early advantage in the second frame after freshman
Cal Barnett-Mayotte used an infield single to bring home Cox. Although the Mules pulled ahead with two runs in the top of third, Swarthmore was quick to answer with two runs of its own to retake the lead.
Ryan Burnett led off with a single to left center and scored two batters later on a base hit by
Steven Matos-Torres, who advanced to second on the throw home. A single by
Jaron Shrock and a fielder's choice RBI by Cox gave the Garnet a 3-2 margin entering the fourth.
Muhlenberg evened the game and then regained the lead with runs in the fifth and six innings before taking advantage of a Garnet fielding miscue in the seventh to tack on five more runs for the final margin.
Swarthmore looks to bounce back when it travels to McDaniel for a Centennial Conference doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 18. Game times are scheduled for 12:30 and 3:30 p.m.
