Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College softball team dropped a non-conference game to Widener by a 4-0 decision on Wednesday, Apr. 16 at Clothier Field.
Widener (18-4) took advantage of five Garnet errors to record the four-run victory and got on the scoreboard in the top of the third. Liz Antonucci belted a triple to right center and then came home when Taylor Church slapped a ball that was misplayed by the Garnet shortstop. Back-to-back errors in left field then allowed the Pride to double their lead in the fifth.
After the visitors tacked on another run in the top of the sixth, senior
Emma Madarasz drilled a leadoff single through the left side for her third hit of the afternoon to give the Garnet life. The attempt to slice the deficit came up short, however, as classmate
Laurie Sellars lined into a double play and
Chelsea Matzko ended the inning with a flyout to left.
Jamie Williams picked up the victory for Widener and improved to 1-0 this spring by pitching five shutout innings. She surrendered three hits, struck out four and did not issue a walk. Lindsey Manera was credited with a save by throwing two scoreless frames of relief. Freshman
Mary Olesnavich of Swarthmore suffered the loss and dropped to 3-4 after giving up four runs, including three earned, and eight hits. She fanned two and did not issue a walk.
Swarthmore (5-13) will play its final home games of the regular season when it hosts Haverford on Saturday, Apr. 18 beginning at 1 p.m.
