Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College baseball team (17-10) returned to its winning ways with a 2-1 triumph over DeSales on Thursday, Apr. 16. Freshman
Max Kassan earned his second career win after striking out eight and surrendering only one run in a complete-game effort.
The southpaw had help from his defense, which committed no errors on the afternoon, and ended the game in dramatic fashion as junior
David Wolfson made a diving stop at third base and threw to first to record the final out.
Swarthmore managed only two hits over eight innings, but also took advantage of seven walks by DeSales starter Adam Donovan. The Garnet broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth when
Ryan Burnett hit a two-RBI single to right field to drive in
Matt Palmer and
Wesley Fishburn. With a single, Fishburn extended his hitting streak to 22 games and has reached base in the past 36 games.
The Bulldogs got a run back in the sixth and threatened in the ninth with a runner on second and only one out. After Kassan fanned his eighth batter of the day, a well-hit ball by Konner Schneider nearly eluded Wolfson, but the junior made a heads-up play to clinch the Garnet victory.
Swarthmore will play its fourth game in as many days when it hosts Centennial opponent Muhlenberg on Friday, Apr. 17 at 3:30 p.m.
