Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior Joe Hagedorn netted his first career hat trick, but it wasn't enough, as the Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team fell to Franklin & Marshall by a 15-6 score on Saturday, Apr. 11 at Clothier Field.
Swarthmore, which recognized its eight seniors prior to the game, got off to a hot start when Hagedorn unleashed a shot that landed in the back of the net just 50 seconds into the game. The Diplomats, however, responded in a big way by netting six straight goals before the end of the quarter. After the visitors got two more tallies in the second, freshman
Cam Marsh ended the Garnet's scoring drought which lasted nearly 29 minutes by finishing a pass from senior
Andrew Preiser to make it 8-2 at the break.
In the second half, Franklin & Marshall (6-6, CC 3-2) remained in control by utilizing a balanced offense. Six players factored into three goals in less than six minutes before
Matt Johnson scored for the Garnet at the 1:02 mark in the third to make it 11-3.
Swarthmore would come no closer than eight goals the rest of the way, as the Diplomats netted four of the first five goals in the fourth. Hagedorn completed his first-ever hat trick by slipping a shot past backup goalkeeper William Poillon with just 0.7 seconds remaining.
Timothy Mattessich picked up the victory for F&M by making three saves over the first three quarters, while Swarthmore's
Callen Rain was tagged with the loss after redirecting five shots in the first. The Diplomats had a 41-25 advantage in total shots, while the Garnet won 16 of the 25 face-offs and had a 31-28 in ground balls.
Swarthmore (6-5, CC 1-4) will look to put an end to its three-game skid when it visits Dickinson on Saturday, Apr. 18 at 1 p.m.
