Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla.- The Swarthmore College baseball team went 1-1 against Hiram College (2-2) on Tuesday, March 8 to improve to 3-1 on the season. The Garnet dropped the first game, 5-2, but ended the day on a high note with a 4-1 win in the second half of the doubleheader.
Sophomore
Wesley Fishburn finished a perfect 5-for-5 with two triples and two runs while junior
John Lim recorded 3 RBI.
Fishburn led off the first game with a walk and stole second to put himself in scoring position with no outs. A single from
Ryan Burnett and a sacrifice fly by Lim brought Fishburn around and gave the Garnet an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Hiram overtook Swarthmore with two consecutive sacrifice flies after loading the bases. After a scoreless second inning, the Garnet had an opportunity in the top of the third to tie the game at two when
Cal Barnett-Mayotte reached third with only one out, but Hiram escaped without surrendering a run.
Swarthmore trailed 2-1 until the sixth inning when the team capitalized on two errors to score the tying run. Lim reached on a fielder's choice and then advanced to second on a Hiram miscue. The junior was brought home soon after when senior
Scoop Ruxin took first base on a fielder's choice.
Ultimately, Hiram's three-run sixth inning was too much for the Garnet to overcome and relief pitcher Jaren Bell picked up the save by striking out the side in order to end the game. Senior
Luke Alventosa pitched a complete game and finished with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Strong pitching helped Swarthmore capture the second leg of the doubleheader with sophomore
Aidan Miller fanning nine and allowing no earned runs in seven innings.

After allowing a triple on Hiram's first at bat of the game, Miller struck out the next two and escaped the inning on a groundout. Fishburn picked up where he left off in the first game with a leadoff triple and scored following a Burnett single.
Hiram tied the game in the second inning and it remained knotted at one apiece until the bottom of the third when a single from Lim brought Barnett-Mayotte around from second. Fishburn tripled again in the fifth and scored on a sac fly by Lim to bring the Garnet lead to 3-1. Swarthmore capped off its scoring in the sixth when
Zach Powell's squeeze bunt drove in
Roy Walker.
Miller picked up the win after DeAmicis of Hiram grounded into a double play to end the game.
