Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. –
John Lim and
Wesley Fishburn each recorded four hits and combined for five runs as the Swarthmore College baseball team (2-0) swept MacMurray College (0-2) to begin its spring break road trip. The Garnet claimed an 8-5 win in the first game and completed the sweep with a 7-4 victory in the second half of the doubleheader. Sophomore
Ryan Burnett also finished with four runs in six at bats.
After three scoreless innings in the first game, the Garnet got on the board when freshman
Jaron Shrock hit a two-RBI single to drive in Lim and junior
Roy Walker. MacMurray answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the fourth, but Swarthmore regained breathing room in the top of the fifth frame.
In that inning, Burnett hit a two-out single and advanced to second after Lim was hit by a pitch. A single from freshman
Joseph Jackson loaded the bases and a wild pitch gave the Garnet a 3-1 lead. Walker's triple brought home Burnett and Jackson to round out the scoring for Swarthmore.
Sophomore
Henry Cappel retired the side in order in the fifth, recording two of his six strikeouts on the day. In the bottom half of the inning, the Garnet added three more runs, pushing its lead to 8-1 behind RBI from Fishburn and Lim. Although MacMurray narrowed its deficit to 8-5 after the eighth, junior
Nathan Booth helped secure the win for Swarthmore as he closed out the ninth inning with three consecutive strikeouts.
There was no shortage of offense for the Garnet in the second game as the team finished with 11 hits en route to a 7-4 win. The team got off to a fast start in the first when Jackson singled to score Fishburn and gave Swarthmore a 1-0 lead. Fishburn would score again in the third inning behind a single from Burnett, who also reached home on a passed ball.
MacMurray tied the game three apiece in the fifth inning, but the Garnet had an answer in the form of a two-RBI single by
Scoop Ruxin to bring home Lim and Burnett. Swarthmore added insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to gain a 7-3 advantage.
The Garnet were in a jam in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and one out, but allowed only one run and ended the day with a double play.
Max Kassan picked up the win in his first collegiate appearance with four strikeouts, one hit and no runs allowed in 3.2 innings. Booth picked up his second save of the day and
Brian Gibbs also had a strong showing, allowing no hits in the first three innings of the game.
The team looks to continue its streak when it plays a doubleheader against Hiram College at Fort Myers on Monday, March 9. The first pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
