Cam Marsh scored five goals and senior
Andrew Preiser tallied three in leading the Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team to an 18-5 victory over Drew in the pouring rain on Wednesday, March 4 at Clothier Field. The Garnet netted 11 unanswered between the first and third quarters and never looked back.
The teams were evenly matched in the first quarter as Marsh scored the first goal of the game at 10:29. Drew (0-1) responded with two straight goals, but Swarthmore recovered and led 4-3 at the end of the quarter by getting a marker from Preiser with just four seconds left.
The Garnet dominated the second quarter, scoring four more goals and shutting out the Rangers. DeWan led the offense by finding the back of the net twice in the frame to help the hosts build an 8-3 advantage at the break.
Swarthmore continued where it left off in the first half by scoring five consecutive goals in the third. Marsh netted two, freshman
Sam Sokota scored one and tallied an assist, and
Ian Lukaszewicz assisted on two goals during the stretch. Drew's Robert Hart scored to make it 13-4 and end a streak of 11 straight unanswered Garnet goals with 1:26 remaining, but that was as close as the Rangers would come the rest of the way.
Freshman
John Calia, who was making his first collegiate appearance, saved six shots between the pipes for Swarthmore. Drew goaltender Teddy Sweeney made 13 stops in the losing effort. Swarthmore had a 40-23 advantage in ground balls, a 39-24 advantage in total shots and won 17 of the 27 faceoffs.
Swarthmore will next play at home against Vassar College on Saturday, March 7 at 3 p.m.
